This could be me…

Artists Statement

Articulating my work and what it is about has always been somewhat of a challenge for me. Initially paintings started off as an exploration of material, form, shape, colour, etc. I simply took a given sized picture plane and figured out what colours I would like to apply to the surface and how I would like them to interact with one another. I have always been drawn to large fields of colour with intersecting and juxtaposing shapes and forms. This simplicity spoke to me and creating was free and unencumbered, it felt natural. I began to explore reasons for why I was drawn to creating this type of abstract work. I fell across names such as Newman, Rothko, Malevich, Mondrian, Kruger, etc. I researched propaganda and mass communication. I drew on my graphic design education and affinity for the clean polished look of advertisements, especially the accessibility of posters used during the world wars. This research only intrigued me into learning more about propaganda and persuasion, about power, and about politics. I began to read about historic figures such as Aristotle, Gandhi, and Guevara. Marx and Orwell crept into my own personal theoretical developments. I became increasingly engaged in quenching my thirst for understanding the polity of society. My art has since shifted from a simple exploration in application and composition towards a tool in communicating the galvanization of thought and experience. On the surface, my work deals with basic colour and shape and its sensual nature, but underneath there is a complex accrual of ideologies, theories and realizations that are in constant flux and augmentation. My work is an exercise in the process of bridging the surface with what lies underneath.
